Professor William Allsop to Give Vernon Harcourt Lecture at ICE (22/02/10)
Vernon Harcourt Lecture 2010
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is pleased to announce that the Vernon Harcourt Lecture will be taking place on Monday 22 February 2010 at One Great George Street, Westminster, London.
This year’s lecture will be delivered by Professor William Allsop, who will speak on:
“Historic British Breakwaters: What did we build between 1600 and 1900, how well have they lasted, and what have we learnt?”.
William’s presentation will describe the evolution and construction of breakwaters in the UK since the beginning of the 17th century, drawing particular attention on those designed during the major period of harbour expansion from 1830 – 1900.
The lecture will identify the key modus operandi and failure modes of breakwaters, and William will discuss how recent research studies in UK, Netherlands and Germany have revealed how these walls work and fail.
William was recently the Chairman of the Organising Committee of the highly successful Coasts, Marine Structure and Breakwaters Conference 2009 in Edinburgh. He is also Technical Director for Maritime Structures at HR Wallingford and Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton.
A Prestige Dinner will follow the lecture, offering attendees an excellent opportunity to:
• network with their peers, partners and competitors
• meet the speaker
• continue the evening’s discussion.
