Title: Indi Wanders: a transformative approach to hazard awareness and preparedness
Abstract:
Despite public preparedness efforts in areas at risk of natural hazard events, including the North American cities of Los Angeles and Seattle, there remains a large proportion of the public who lack awareness and are not taking adequate steps towards being prepared.
Indi Wanders is a non-profit social enterprise focused on engaging local communities in disaster preparedness, and aims to facilitate communication between local communities and the disaster risk reduction (DRR)community, involving emergency management departments, hazards scientists and local emergency response groups.
During the seminar we will be introducing Indi Wanders and its principles, our Los Angeles-based work in public earthquake preparedness, and our plans for developing community preparedness projects in Los Angeles and Seattle – creating grassroots documentary films, integrating behavioural psychology, and addressing disconnect from the natural environment and ‘community’.
